Overview
Youth Fair Chance served the employment needs of young people in four West Seattle neighborhoods: Delridge, South Park, High Point, and White Center, providing economically- disadvantaged participants with support services to successfully complete education, training, and employment programs.
In Detail
Youth Fair Chance was comprised of three major components: an in-school youth strategy, delivered in partnership with two local high schools; an out-of-school program serving young adults ages 17 - 29 through a community career center; and the Leadership Council, a community resource advisory board comprised of over 40 individuals representing all sectors of the community.
The in-school portion of the program focused on school-to-work curriculum development, the establishment of links between schools and employers, and the provision of career education and development for high school students. The community career center offered out-of-school youth and young adults a variety of services, including GED training, case management, and anti-violence workshops.
Funding from Port Jobs enabled the Seattle-King County Private Industry Council to meet local match contribution requirements for a $2.9 million federal demonstration grant to support the project. Port Jobs operated Youth Fair Chance from 1995 - 97.
