Overview
Port Jobs supports several programs designed to ensure a steady supply of qualified, diverse apprentices and develop a consistent demand for apprentice labor.
In Detail
Employment in the skilled trades provides an income, benefits and a pension plan, enabling working people to support their families and be a contributing member of their community.
However, entry into a skilled trade is not always easy. Would-be apprentices need an understanding of the training process particular to their trade, as well as resources for union dues, tool purchase, reliable personal transportation and other requirements for starting and completing an apprenticeship.
Barriers to apprenticeships don't only limit workers. A limited supply of apprentices (and journey-level workers) can limit progress and inflate labor costs on a project.
Apprenticeship Opportunities Project (AOP) AOP is a free, not-for-profit program that helps people establish good careers and succeed in apprenticeships and trades-related jobs. Learn more.
Career Workplace Exploration in the Skilled Trades (C-WEST) C-WEST is a unique school-to-work partnership based at Rainier Beach High School. The program introduces high school students to future careers in the skilled trades and other disciplines through classroom training and paid, practical internships. Learn more.
Apprentice Utilization Agreements Port Jobs brokers agreements in which developers voluntarily commit to use apprentice labor for 15% or more of the total labor hours on a given project. These agreements strengthen the apprenticeship system and create demand for skilled tradespeople. Developers who have signed agreements with Port Jobs include Vulcan Northwest, Amgen, Harbor Properties, and Pine Street Development. Learn more.
