Here's an
easy way to help your employees keep more of what they earn: Publicize the
free tax preparation service available at Airport Jobs.
The Airport Jobs office will be a free tax preparation site from January 17
through April 12, 2008. Airport employers who promote the service are key to
the program's success. If you'd like more information about how
Airport Jobs can help you publicize this service, including free brochures
to stuff in paycheck envelopes, contact Gerrie Neifert at 206-835-7502.
Helping working families keep more of what they earn
Airport employees will have their tax returns prepared by IRS-trained
volunteers who will help them take advantage of all available tax credits.
Since the service is completely free, clients avoid high preparation fees
and "rapid refund loans" that often drastically reduce the amount of their
refund. Returns are filed electronically for a fast refund, usually in 10-12
days.
For some low-income families, their tax refund check is larger than any
paycheck they receive during the year. Employers who offer their workers
free tax preparation are helping boost their employees' annual income at
virtually no cost.
Success is in the numbers
Last year, the free tax preparation site at Airport Jobs helped low-wage
workers from the airport and vicinity file 500 tax returns, resulting in
over $638,696 in refunds - money that returned directly to the local
economy, and made life better for low-wage workers at airport companies.
Volunteers make a difference
Each free tax preparation site is staffed by volunteers and staff who have
participated in an IRS training that sets them (and their clients) up for
success. Volunteers at the Airport Jobs site assisted local families
in claiming $173,821 in Earned Income Tax Credit. EITC refunds have
boosted incomes as much as 30 to 40 percent. But, as one volunteer at
the Airport Jobs site shared, the EITC refund can do even more than that.
"I helped a single mother of three at the
SeaTac Airport tax site," a volunteer from last year's Free Tax Prep
Campaign said. "Her annual income is $16,500. She had not filed for
the Earned Income Credit in 2003, 2004 or 2005. In addition to filing for
2006 return we helped her amend each of her previous tax returns resulting
in a refund of $13,866. She had been expecting a refund of only $500. Her
tears and hugs made me realize exactly how much impact we can have on one
family."
