Community Partners for Asian Employment

Overview

The Community Partners for Asian Employment program taught basic English and employment skills to limited English-speaking immigrants and refugees receiving Aid to Families with Dependent Children.  Once these skills were mastered, participants were placed in on-the-job training programs or employment offering high-level skills training and potential for advancement. Port Jobs operated Community Partners for Asian Employment from 1996 to 1997.

In Detail

The program was operated as an agency-employer partnership. Asian Counseling and Referral Service (ACRS) recruited students for its vocational English class. While enrolled in Vocational English-as-a-Second-Language (VESL) training, participants also completed job readiness training and at least 12 weeks of volunteer work experience in non-profit organizations. To maximize success, ACRS offered comprehensive support services including child care and counseling.

Upon completing their educational training and volunteering, participants applied for openings at Uwajimaya. Successful applicants either entered an on-the-job training program in Uwajimaya's Seasia or Food Service International warehouse, or began employment in the Kustom Goods or Magic Dragon food service division. Follow-up on-site ESL classes were offered to participants as well as current Uwajimaya employees with limited English speaking abilities, if needed.
