AOP provides a chance to move up
Nearly 1100 people placed in apprenticeships and trades-related jobs to date

Port Jobs Reports, Summer 2005

Over the past five years, placements at AOP have varied along with the strength of the building and construction sector of the local economy.

Apprenticeship Opportunities Project (AOP) promotes opportunities for women, people of color, and others facing employment barriers to establish careers in the building and construction trades through apprenticeship.

Operated by Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Employment for Women and Men (ANEW), AOP helps people enter and succeed in apprenticeships and trades-related jobs. It is both a support system for apprentices and an apprenticeship information clearinghouse.

AOP staff recruit applicants for apprenticeships and trades-related jobs through recruitment events, WorkSource Centers, referrals from pre-apprenticeship training programs and community-based organizations that work with low-income individuals.

AOP's main services include:

  • Helping clients choose a trade and understand the application process.
  • Providing case management and support.
  • Preparing clients for the apprenticeship or job interview.
Once accepted into an apprenticeship program or upon getting a trades-related job, AOP provides financial assistance to qualified individuals so they can go to work.

AOP's goal is to help applicants enter the apprenticeship program or trades-related job of their choice, and remain in that program until completion.

Apprenticeship Utilization Agreements

Port Jobs brokers agreements in which developers voluntarily commit to use apprentice labor for 15% or more of the labor hours on a given project (See Alley 24 and 2200 Westlake stories, page 10). Such agreements strengthen the apprenticeship system and create demand for tradespeople. Developers who have signed agreements include:

  • Amgen
  • Harbor Properties
  • Pine Street Development
  • Vulcan Inc.
