Harbor, Vulcan Adopt Apprentice Utilization Goals for 307 Westlake Port Jobs Reports, Summer 2003 Once again, Harbor Properties and Vulcan, Inc. have shown their commitment to providing living wage job opportunities for construction apprentices in King County. Through an agreement with Port Jobs and the Seattle-King County Building and Construction Trades Council, Harbor Properties, the building developer, has adopted apprentice utilization goals for 307 Westlake, a 5-story, 112,000 square foot biomedical research facility. The $20 million development recently broke ground in Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood and will be completed by early 2004. Harbor has committed to hiring apprentices to work at least 15% of the labor hours on the project. Within that, people of color will work 21% of apprentice labor hours, and 20% of those hours will be worked by women. The developers are contributing approximately $10,000 to Port Jobs to support its Apprenticeship Opportunities Project, which recruits apprentices and provides support to help them succeed in the trades. Previously, Harbor Properties participated in the Port Jobs program with the construction of the McGuire, a 272-unit residential high-rise in Belltown. “Harbor Properties is always looking for opportunities to make Seattle’s urban neighborhoods a better place to live, work and play,” said 307 Westlake Project Manager, Gary Blakeslee. “Partnering with Port Jobs to help increase apprentice labor and living-wage employment locally is a natural extension of our company’s core values. The program has been a tremendous success, both with past jobs and with 307 Westlake. We look forward to continuing to work with Port Jobs in future projects.”
