Amgen's Helix Project Outpaces Apprenticeship Goals as Completion Nears

Port Jobs Reports, Summer 2003

Amgen, formerly Immunex Corporation, is exceeding its goal for using apprentices to build the Helix project, the new research and technology center under construction on Seattle’s waterfront.  Apprentices have worked 18% of the total labor hours since the start of construction in 2001, surpassing the original 15% goal.  The project will be completed by the end of 2003.

This success comes from the combined efforts of the Helix apprenticeship team, which includes representatives from Amgen, Port Jobs, the Seattle-King County Building and Construction Trades Council, the Apprenticeship Opportunities Project, and Sordoni Skanska, the general contractor.

Through regular communication and monthly workforce updates, the team tracks the project’s progress in meeting its apprentice utilization goals.  New sub-contractors are educated about the apprentice goals, and hiring plans are developed to help identify which trades are going to be in demand.  Members also develop strategies for working with sub-contractors that are falling short.  That way, the team can quickly identify opportunities and potential problem areas to ensure that everyone is working toward the goal.
