Partnership Drives Working Wheels

Port Jobs Reports, Summer 2003

Less than one year after opening its doors, Working Wheels sold its seventy-fifth car.

“It’s a tremendous start,” said Susan Crane, Executive Director of Port Jobs.   “Working Wheels is more the just a place for eligible clients to buy a quality used car.   It’s a gateway to asset building for low-income working families, made possible through a wide array of partnerships across the community.”

The partnership starts with the Fremont Public Association, the program operator, and the Credit Union of the Pacific (CUP), the lender, and extends to nearly a dozen other for profit, non-profit and government agencies.

The program’s success has been shown by more than just car sales:  “So far, we’ve had zero delinquencies.  Every account is performing and we’re now providing additional banking services to Working Wheels customers,” said Laurie Stewart, CUP President.   “We believe that these customers have been doing so well because Working Wheels helps create responsible car owners.”

“We’re very happy with Working Wheels’ success and are excited about its future,” said Crane.  “It’s a representation of what Port Jobs is all about – bringing together partners to build smart strategies that expand employment opportunities across the community.”
