New Airport Jobs office space a real holiday present for employers

Since opening in January 2000, Airport Jobs popularity has increased dramatically. With  hundreds of job seekers visiting every week, people were feeling the pinch of close quarters.

On October 12, all that changed for the better. Airport Jobs moved into a brighter, larger, and more functional space next door, about one-third larger than before – a real holiday treat for everyone who uses Airport Jobs!

Big Turnout at Fall Job Fair

Over 650 job-seekers visited with 13 employers, 3 colleges, and 5 community organizations at the Job Fair held on October 12, 2004.

Most job-seekers had never visited the Airport Jobs office before, so employers got a good look at new prospective candidates for their open positions.

The next job fair will be held April 14, 2005.

Employers and job seekers feel benefits
"Employers who use space for interviews are very grateful - many have no office space on the public side of security so have no private space for interviewing. They can do both individual and group interviews in our office now," says Ruth Westerbeck, Airport Jobs Program Manager.

Job seekers appreciate the expanded reception counter that creates better flow in the office and shorter lines during peak periods. Says one, "Wow! It is much less crowded in here, it's not so hot – and it is much brighter!"

According to Westerbeck, the larger space accommodates extra volunteers and interns to assist job seekers - thus more help and shorter waits in line. It also provides office space for Airport Jobs’ partners, like South Seattle Community College (SSCC) English-as-a-second language teachers.

New programs and services to take advantage of space
The larger area will also be useful this winter and spring, when Airport Jobs hosts a Free Tax Preparation Site through the United Way’s Earned Income Tax Credit campaign. Other plans are also underway to expand SSCC’s work at Airport Jobs by: 1) offering job-seeking classes, and 2) working with employers to design new skills classes and certificates to help employees advance at work. Also be on the lookout for details about Airport Jobs 5-year Anniversary Party – more information coming soon!
