The best things in life are free

Ever heard of TINSTAFL? You probably have - even if you think you haven't.

TINSTAFL stands for “There Is No Such Thing As a Free Lunch.”

Most of the time, TINSTAFL is the case. But there is one outstanding exception: the free income tax preparation service offered at Airport Jobs.

Last year, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site at Airport Jobs helped low-wage workers from the airport and vicinity file 242 tax returns, resulting in over $275,000 in refunds.

Free and fast
Since the VITA service is completely free, clients keep their entire refund and don’t need to pay high fees to commercial tax preparers. Basic tax returns are electronically filed for a fast refund, usually in 10-12 days!

VITA services will be available again on Saturdays at the Airport Jobs Office throughout next year’s tax season. You can help your employees take advantage of this free service that puts cash directly into their pockets – and it won’t cost you anything, either!

Airport Jobs will have flyers ready for you distribute to your employees – either with paychecks or with W2’s - by mid-December. Posters marketing VITA services will also be available to put up in break rooms and/or offices where employees will see them.

To request VITA materials
Just complete this form and fax it to 206.835.7507, or email it to westerbeck.r@portseattle.org. (You can also phone call Ruth Westerbeck at Airport Jobs at 206.835.7506.) The materials will be delivered right to you as soon as they are ready.

And yes, it is still a free lunch. All services are provided free of charge by volunteers trained by the Internal Revenue Service to prepare returns, and all promotional materials are provided free of charge to employers. The VITA service is jointly sponsored by Port Jobs as part of a County-wide Earned Income Tax Credit Campaign led by the United Way of King County.

Interested in volunteering?
If you or someone you know might be interested in becoming a volunteer tax preparer, contact Ruth Westerbeck at (206) 835-7506 or email westerbeck.r@portseattle.org. Volunteers will receive eight hours of training from the Internal Revenue Service during December or early January. Following training, the time commitment will be seven four-hour shifts during the January to April 2005 tax season.
